How to transfer your PF to a new account — and why it beats withdrawing

Quick answer
When you change jobs, transfer your EPF to the new account online through the EPFO member portal — don't withdraw. Transferring keeps your 5-year continuity (which makes withdrawals tax-free) and lets the corpus keep compounding.
Why transfer instead of withdraw
A transfer preserves your continuous service — so when you eventually withdraw after 5 total years, it's fully tax-free (see Form 15G & PF taxability). Withdrawing between jobs breaks that, and can be taxable if you're under 5 years.
How to transfer online (EPFO member portal)
- Make sure your UAN is active and your KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, bank) is verified with the new employer.
- Log in at the EPFO Member portal (unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in) with your UAN.
- Go to Online Services → One Member One EPF Account (Transfer Request).
- Verify personal details, pick the previous account, and choose your current or previous employer to attest.
- Get the OTP on your Aadhaar-linked mobile, submit, and download the transfer claim (Form 13).
- The chosen employer approves it digitally; then EPFO processes the transfer.
How long it takes
Usually about 1 to 3 weeks (up to ~20 days) once the employer approves. Track it under Online Services → Track Claim Status.
If the field office rejects it
- Open Track Claim Status and read the exact rejection reason (usually a KYC/detail mismatch, wrong employer selected, or missing attestation).
- Fix that specific issue — e.g. correct your date of birth/name/Aadhaar, get KYC re-verified, or select the right attesting employer.
- Re-submit the transfer request. If it keeps failing, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS with your UAN and the claim ID.
Who it helps
Anyone changing jobs — transfer within a few weeks of joining so nothing is lost and your tax-free clock keeps running.
